Design Thinking at Work in HungryWheels (Part 2)

In 2018, we set out with a single goal: to create the Best Place Kitchen to Work for every chef. This ambition was driven by a simple yet powerful realization — to transform the culinary workspace into an environment where chefs not only thrive but feel empowered.

The Evolving Role of the Chef

The role of the modern chef has evolved significantly. No longer confined to just cooking, chefs are now responsible for a wide array of tasks, including interacting with customers, managing teams, and overseeing procurement. This shift marks a departure from the traditional perception of a chef, requiring a unique blend of multitasking, strategic thinking, and adaptability. With these added responsibilities, chefs must navigate a complex landscape, balancing creativity with business acumen.

This realization led to a key insight: for chefs to succeed in this environment, their workspace must adapt to meet these challenges. It’s no longer just about the kitchen — it’s about the entire experience. This is where Experience Design became central to our vision at HungryWheels.

Bringing Together Diverse Expertise

To make this vision a reality, we knew we had to think beyond the kitchen. It wasn’t just about cooking equipment or culinary skills; it was about crafting an entire ecosystem that supported the chef’s journey. This meant building a cross-discipline team of players who have probably never come together – a digital System Designer, a Furniture Designer, a Business Model Architect, a Communications Specialist, a Logistics Expert, and an Army veteran.

At the core of our design approach is the S.U.M. philosophy, a framework created by our CEO, Vikram Sood. S.U.M. stands for Simplified, Unified, Monetizable. This philosophy guided us in building a system that balanced the seemingly impossible triangle of:

  • Trustable Kitchens-On-Wheels: Ensuring reliability and consistency across all operations.
  • Flexible Interior Systems: Designing mobile kitchens that could adapt to various needs and spaces.
  • Friendly Technology: Making technology intuitive and easy to use for chefs at every level.

By focusing on these three pillars, we were able to create a solution that seamlessly integrated all aspects of the chef’s environment, from the physical space to the digital tools they use.
